On 25 May 2018, the biggest changes in data protection for 20 years came into force in the form of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. This legislation affects how you gain the consent of your customers and employees to process and store their personal data.
Individuals also gained greater rights to access, amending and removing the personal data you hold about them. New sanctions were introduced for businesses that don’t comply with the new data protection requirements and companies are urged to start acting now.
You might be thinking…
- I don’t process personal data
- Is it really that big a deal?
- I don’t know where to start
Why you should act now?
- You may believe that you do not process personal data, but every time you send an email to a contact, call a client or network, you’re processing personal data and will need to ensure your practices are up to speed.
- Where the Information Commissioner’s Office has been handed greater powers to fine data protection infringements, this has led to real penalties being handed to businesses for their non-compliance. This includes British Airways being fined £189m and Marriot being fined £99m respectively.
- The first stage of understanding your compliance is understanding what data is coming into your business and then tracking its journey – this is easiest when producing a data map. Think of it as a road map for the data.
