Michael Steel is the founder and managing director of Kiwi Education, a training provider who deliver a wide range of qualifications within the workplace including Apprenticeships and Traineeships.

Originally starting his career as an apprentice himself, Michael has spent fifteen years within the education sector. He was awarded the City of Southampton Award in 2012 for his efforts campaigning for more government support for apprenticeships for disadvantaged and disabled young people.

We caught up with Michael to hear more about his journey with Kiwi Education and how Hybrid have helped along the way.

Here’s what he had to say:

Why did you start Kiwi Education?

I started Kiwi Education Limited because I have always appreciated the value of apprenticeships. I knew I always wanted to remain within the apprenticeship world but I had my own ideas about how apprenticeships should be run. Personally, I don’t believe I would have ever reached my full potential without the opportunities that apprenticeships have offered me in the past.

What has been your most satisfying moment in business to date?

I would say that my most satisfying moment to date would have to be overtaking the headcount for apprentices on programme from my last employer. My former employer had a headcount of 310 whereas I am proud to say Kiwi Education now boasts a headcount of over 1000.

If you had to pass on one key tip to our clients for their businesses, what would it be?

My key tip would be to develop home-grown talent in your organisation. Bring in young staff (such as an apprentice!), invest in them and develop their opportunities. They will stay loyal to your organisation and grow with the company.

Why did you hire Hybrid – what was appealing to you?

I liked Hybrid’s straight talking, no hidden fee approach. I also bought into Ryan as a person.

How have Hybrid helped Kiwi Education?

Hybrid have helped Kiwi Education on a number of matters. They trademarked ‘Kiwi’ for us and also gave us substantial support with our rebrand. We have also benefitted from their legal healthcheck service and ad hoc legal guidance, such as advice on shareholders’ agreements. Hybrid have also facilitated our business development through introducing us to numerous contacts.
